The new Rietwis sports grounds are part of the Wattwil cantonal and vocational school campus and include various outdoor sports areas with a mini-golf course, a triple gymnasium, as well as their access, including a new entrance to the outdoor swimming pool.

The concept is based on the landscape conditions and draws on local themes such as the River Thur, the hillside landscape and the adjacent woodland areas. Orthogonal to the course of the river and slope, a multi-layered structure of various sports and playgrounds is created, alternating with different types of planting, paths and landscaped recreational areas. This arrangement supports the large-scale permeability, connecting the river area with the hill ranges and efficiently integrates the site into the wider landscape.

A new central axis runs between the mini golf course, the outdoor swimming pool and the new sports areas, guiding a forest strip, set back by vertical planting, back towards the river. This landscape axis provides access to the sports hall by bicycle, car or on foot.

The open space axis integrates infrastructural elements such as car parks and bicycle parking and is lined with newly planted native woodland and riverside tree species like beeches, maples and willows, as well as partially by hedges. Flower meadows fill the open areas up to the ball-stop fences at the ends of the two football pitches. These fences are supplemented on a second level by climbing plants.

Along a second axis running north-south, the sports facilities are organised. The spacious grass pitch is located on the western edge of the site, marking a formal boundary to the neighbouring residential buildings. Tall, pruned columnar poplars structure the sports fields and assist visitors with orientation.
