Messestadt Riem, Munich
Framed and Shared
About 10 km from central Munich, Riem is a new area being constructed atop the former airport grounds. Project WA1 includes a residential perimeter block along with its adjoining day care and family centre. The primary aim of the landscape design is the clear structuring of the outdoor spaces for multiple uses. Public and private zones are spatially differentiated from one another. A 2m-high larch hedge acts as a border element demarcating the inner courtyard. Private garden areas associated with the residential building are planted with different flowering tree species, while the communal open space is planted with gingko trees. The playground in front of the day care centre is raised to offer sand boxes inserted into a warm wood-block floor.
