Online lecture: the nature of the city
In contrast to the wilderness, the landscape is designed by humans. As a primarily cultural good, discourse forms the basis for working with landscape. Terms and typologies such as garden, park, courtyard, square or promenade make landscape legible. They form a matrix for the order of the urban landscape and allow us to distinguish the manifold gradations from private to public space and its use, scale, functionality and atmosphere. Last but not least, the global phenomenon of rising temperatures as a result of climate change requires individual solutions based on local conditions and discourse of development on a large scale. A sustainable city must be thought from the landscape.
