Thomas Kissling presents a lecture titled „Profiles of the Alps“ as part of the lecture series at the Institute of Urban Design, TU Graz.
Abstract:
As climate change progresses, the Alpine region is undergoing an accelerated metamorphosis. The former notion of the Alps as a stable and enduring landscape is continuously dissolving and changing into an image that reveals the inherent fragility of the mountains. Meanwhile, the macro-region of the Alps is gaining importance as a resource-rich region, intensifying existing conflicts over land use and competing interests. In the light of these challenges, we advocate an overarching perspective that uses thoughtfully orchestrated landscape profiles to foster informed discussions on the future spatial development of the Alps.
Visuals: ENERGY / The Gorner Glacier above Zermatt is expected to leave behind a natural lake by around 2050 (visualisation above). Studio Vogt proposes that this lake be designed as a near-natural reservoir without a dam. The water would flow through turbines, thus generating energy. Today (image below), Alpiq has other plans. They aim to construct a large reservoir, which, however, would require annual emptying and refilling due to heavy erosion and sedimentation – a problem for flora and fauna. © Gorner Glacier, Gokulan Manoharan, Studio Günther Vogt, Department Architecture, ETH Zurich
